Luke is an athlete that everyone from his school admires and looks up to. He has big dreams of one day leaving the farm he’s grown up on behind and becoming a college baseball player. This dream isn’t given a lot of support from his father at first but Luke is determined and, without telling his parents, he journeys to Mississippi to tryout for the baseball team there. The coach gets to him with some words and he has trouble maintaining his concentration throughout the tryout. He finally calls his friend and decides to return home after failing in the tryout. He realizes that without his family supporting him, he is nothing.
I actually liked how the story ended with him not doing well like one would believe him to and with him having to return home. The emphasis on the bonds of family was really appreciated, at least by me. That being said, the tryout and change feel like they happened really fast. He realizes he really isn’t much without his family but there is nothing there in the tryout to really reinforce this point. I’d like to see him thinking about something the dad had said or something pertaining to the family (or really the father as he seemed to make the biggest impact in Luke’s life).You could also maybe flesh out the father and son relationship a bit more beyond where they talk about Luke’s aspirations.
